How to make use of Google trends efficiently

Google Trends is a very useful tool to analyse how the trend of a particular keyword is. Go to http://www.google.com/trends and enter keyword. The search results will give you an idea how often that keyword was searched in last few months/years and help in keywords selection process for a website. This graphical representation and numerical data is very easy to understand and useful to plan strategies.

Let’s take an example of keyword “iphone 3g” (Seasonal keyword). In 2008 when iphone 3g was launched, the graph is mighty high which shows that this keyword was being searched a lot in mid of the year 2008 but after that it started decline as the time passes (shown by arrow). The cause of drop in searches for “iPhone 3s” year by year is, apple releases new generation of iPhone each year. So when new iPhone comes in the market, the people become interested in finding information about new iPhone.

The red arrow in below graph shows “iphone 3g” trend from 2008 till mid of 2011. By now search trend has become almost ¼ of the searches in 2008 for this keyword.


So the keyword which you plan to target should not be seasonal keyword otherwise after few months your website will stop receiving traffic from Google and become a big flop.

Let’s apply our mind!

We know that apple would not stop manufacturing iPhone (they release new generation of iphone each year), so will not it be a good idea to target more broader term like “iphone” than “iPhone 3g”?

Let’s take an example of evergreen keyword “iPhone”. Look at the graph below which shows trend of this keyword. You can see that since late 2006, people are more and more searching for this keyword. This keyword is Single word term and a lot of websites are fighting to be among top search results. So it may take some time to be into top 10 but once you get it, you will start receiving constant traffic continuously over the years.
