Here, I’ll discuss basic steps of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) which will guide newbie how they can proceed while taking any website off the ground.
First and foremost step in SEO is to find keywords which are less competitive (easy to rank) and get good searches per month. This is the most important factor and website’s success is all depends on it. So if you are targeting high competitive keywords or keywords with less competition but less searches too, your website will be a super duper flop. The selection of keywords which are good from all SEO prospective consumes much of your time but it is important so give it sometime. Below is a brief of keyword research analysis that will help you select good keywords.
Put yourself in place of visitors and try to find out what keywords you may type in Google search bar if you want to search your website. This will help you make a list of keywords which are closely related to your website. The keyword ideas can also be taken from various tools available online free of cost like Google webmaster tool etc. Collect keywords searched using all the tools and put them in excel spreadsheet. Now you would have to check competition for each keyword and write in the next column. You can find out keyword competition using the query intitle:”your keyword” in Google search bar. This query will show websites which are having same keyword in their title tags and are real competitors. If it shows few hundred results that mean it is ideal to target that keyword otherwise move on to the other keyword. On the other hand when you find low competitive keyword, check out how much people search that keyword in a month. This is really important because there is no use of topping Google for the term which is not much searched. The monthly searches can be found with the help of Google adword tool. Tick “EXACT MATCH” check box from left hand side options of Google adword tool. Third step is to find out search trend of that keyword whether it is continuously been searched for several months or just for some time period. There are some seasonal keywords which after a small time frame stop sending visitors to the website. The keyword search trend can also be figured out using Google adword tool. Once you done all these things, you will have final list of 4-5 keywords which satisfy all above criteria and are the right keywords to start with.
On- page optimisation
After selection of keywords, it’s time for on-page optimisation. On-page optimisation is nothing but making your website keyword rich and make it more prone to be noticed by Google crawler. There are several things come under on-page optimisation. This includes optimising title tag (putting top 2-3 keywords in title). Please make sure the title should not exceed more than 70 characters (including space), Google doesn’t read beyond that. Next is meta tags optimisation where we insert keywords and short description in the body of HTML code of the website. Be specific about keyword density, it should not exceed 2-3%. Then optimise alt tags for images.
That is all about on-page optimisation for a beginner, so if you done all above, on-page optimisation is finished and now be ready for off-page optimisation. The off-page optimisation is nothing but finding out your niche related websites/blogs and try to put your link there. Submit your website to web directories which can be paid inclusion as well as free. Getting listed in Dmoz (biggest online we directory) gives good weight to your websites; Google consider it while ranking a website. Do social bookmarking, it helps.
Write articles and post it to various articles posting sites which are available for free inclusion. The most popular article directory is Ezine that accepts only well written original article and sends good traffic once article is accepted. There are millions of free article directories available on the internet which can be used for article inclusion. Then you can write press release for the launch of new product/services and post it to press release websites. Participate into forums and occasionally post your website link with anchor text (keyword). Find blogs match your niche and write there with link back to your website. Go for blog comments and use your link (DON’T SPAM). Take part in yahoo answers, message board, Yahoo/Google groups. You can buy links to other websites also (not in excess quantity). Repeat off-page optimisation process slowly over and over again, you will see the results.
SEO is not all about what I’ve discussed above, it’s wide topic but for the beginner, these are the basic steps what he/she should know. I will come up with various advance level of SEO tricks pretty soon.
